Dave will definitly know more on US than I do, but I believe those pouches on his front left side are for an m1 carbine. I could be wrong though,

He looks like a forest ranger, " Don't worry kids i'll put out the fire with my magic 1911" HAHA! He was with the 1-7 Cav when they were still a mounted cavalry, and then were dismounted for WWII.

hat is a lemon squeezer 1800s campaign hat tie means Garrison mid 20-30s belt is for a mounted cav trooper with a 1903 or more probably a M1917. both were using a 5 round stripper clip. this belt looses a clip for the rifle and the pistol pouch is part of the belt not a snap on like the M-1 and other 1911 pouches. till WWII the US Army had many many more M1917s than 1903s. durring WWII most of the M-1917s were shipped overseas to england, etc.. that ment the 1903s were left in the US for collectors, movies etc.
M-1 carbines didnt come out till the late 1930s and were not mass issued till 1941.
the 2 pouches are for the 2 extra mags for the M1911
the belt is a Mills post WWI type (lift the dot and not eagle snaps)
everything else is modern mounted cav. looks like he was in the south west due to the fact that they got the new gear and most other units were stuck with the WWI gear.
but i could be wrong. 100 % staged missing the most important thing. the pistol lanyard!

You're right about the SW. Posted at Ft. Bliss. What do you think he would have worn after the unit was dismounted? That's what I'd be interested in doing an impression loadout of.

for combat normal HBT uniform with low boots leggings (sometimes) and a standard M-36 web gear load out.
again depending on your weapon. the cav had a high nember of thompsons.
