I'm just getting into airsoft. I previously played paintball for about 10 years in Massachusetts, but the Texas paintball fields are just too expensive. I also shot IDPA for a few years (but nothing under the new rulebook), a couple USPSA matches, and some NRA smallbore many many years ago.
So far I've played twice at Texas Paintball, and I'm hoping to start going to events at Temple Airsoft. I'm trying to make sure I don't end up buying guns I won't be able to use because of velocity limits.
What I've been seeing at Texas Paintball is:
- a 0-foot minimum distance for spring and green gas pistols (which don't get chrono'ed, but should),
- either a 0 or 10 foot engagement distance for other types of guns shooting under 350 fps (I've seen both distances),
- a 20 foot minimum engagement distance for guns shooting 351-400 fps
- (and some faster guns with longer enagement distances, but I didn't catch all the details)
Which results in most players carrying a GBB sidearm for use inside buildings and some kind of AEG for everything else. From what I can see on the forums here, it sounds like all guns shooting over 300 fps at Temple have a 20 foot minimum distance (or more). Is that accurate?
Do most players carry sidearms for games at Temple, and do those need to be chrono'ed under 300 fps?
I'm trying to figure out if I can get away with a WE "Little Bird" M&P9c for $90 (shooting ~320 fps) or if I need to shell out the extra cash for a VFC M&P (~280 fps) for $140 + $35 for a spare mag.
I've shot about 6000 rounds through real M&P's, so I want to stick to a platform I'm familiar with.
