2014: socialist party wins the presidency, and both houses of congress resulting in massive cuts in the military and the dismantling of most of the US militaries overseas instillation's and many of the active duty military units leaving only 5 army 2 marine divisions 5 carriers and 5 tactical fighter wings. NATO follows suit by disbanding and the new EU military structure is redesigned only for defense and internal security. all US forces start withdrawing from Europe leaving only Ramstine AFB in caretaker status.
2015 new soviet union party wins power in Russia.
North Korea marches unopposed into south Korea under threat of nuclear war. 500 US advisers and USMC embassy guards are all interned by north Korea as prisoners of the 1950-52 war that on paper never ended.
2016 SSU forces most of the former soviet countries to join under economic pressure and military threats. Purges in Kazakhstan and other provinces total over 2 million.
EU central command falls under french control, all deploy able major commands are converted to homeland commands incapable of movement.
2017 EU forces down to only 5 divisions (UK, FRG, FR, SP, and PO), all other NATO members can only muster brigade sized units.
2nd Georgia war, lasts 4 days with 120,000 dead. the US government issues no response and refuses to let the Georgian government in exile entry into the US. prime minister, and all surviving cabinet ministers are killed when a SSU fighter attacks there unarmed transport just off the cost of New York while waiting to land. the prime minister was to give a talk at the UN that afternoon.
the SSU SU-31 was operating from the new fast attack missile aircraft carrier CSS Andropov only 20 miles from the US border.
Ukrainian intervention, 400,000 soviet troops march across the border occupying the Ukraine in 10 days with 600,000 civilians killed or deported to central SSU. wide spread anger in the US over the actions and deaths in central Europe.
2018 new elections in the USA elects a center right president and congress with a mandate to provide national and international defense.
UK forces are expanded to 4 deploy able divisions and 4 Territorial divisions. EU president asks the USA to reestablish NATO.

NATO forces deploy along the polish border hoping that they are not needed. the SSU sees the deployments as a act of war and demands that the NATO forces are withdrawn and Poland is disarmed and occupied by peace keepers from the SSU to ensure continued peace in the region.
NATO refuses.
