I'm putting this out everywhere I can. This happened to my family today.
I'm really ticked off at people who try to run scams right now.
Earlier today, someone from God knows where called my grandmother and told her I was in the Killeen Police Station because I had been caught with marijuana. NOT TRUE. The person who called tried putting on a generic southern accent and my grandmother was in such shock that she actually believed it was me at first. Luckily my uncle was listening in and knew from the start that it wasn't me. After having this person cry to my Ma about needing to get out of jail, a supposed bail bondsman came on the phone and tried to get a moneygram sent to the Dominican Republic (big red flag). My Ma was about to go through with it before she started realizing there were holes in their act (namely that the guy kept calling her grandma when I have never called her that). Also, they never said my name. Ma only said my name because she thought it sounded like me and I am the only grandson who lives in town right now.
Luckily, she asked to get "me" back on the phone. When she tried asking simple personal questions ("What is your mother's name?","What is your father's name?") these people immediately hung up the phone.
Unfortunately, at this time, I had stepped away from my phone so I missed the first few tries of my family to reach me. They even started think I might have been kidnapped. Luckily, it was only a few minutes later that I got to my phone and cleared everything up. I used my lunch break to go see Ma because she was still so shaken up over the whole ordeal. Apparently, only a few minutes before I had arrived, these people had called back to ask if she had gotten the money ready, at which time she told them it was all in the hands of the police now and they hung up again straight away. After calling the police, the only thing they said we can do is spread the word and try to prepare other people for this to happen.
This may not seem like much but it has caused a lot of stress for my family. Please just be wary of any calls you get like this.
Thanks guys!
