DON'T YELL!!! But seriously, I heard about that story this evening and had to shake my head at the kid's stupidity as well. Reading what went down from various sources, it sounds like a justifed shooting on the part of the police. The kid had what apeared to be a real gun, he was making verbal threats, brandished the "gun" at the police, and refused repeated orders to drop the weapon. They were well within the use of force plan of every law enforcement agency I'm aware of to take him down. That it turned out to be a replica firearm makes it all the more of a tragedy of course. My sympathy goes out to the police officers who made the call and the kid's parents. I do have to wonder what the hell he was thinking. It almost sounds like the ever popular "suicide by cop" sytuation you hear about. Finally, why, why, why did you have to link to the Huffington Post to give an acount of the story? I made the mistake of following the link and (agianst my better jugdement) read some of the comments on the post. The amount of anti-law enforcement filth that is spewed on that thread made my blood boil. True enough, you have to expect that sort of thing given the general target audience of leftist sites like HuffPo, but it still irritates me when I make the mistake of reading it! Ok, I'll get off my fiercely pro-law enforcement soap box now! ;D TR

Damn this happened in my hometown. Bout 5 miles from my parents home. This is stupid on his part. Must have been held back several times or started very late in school.

What I'm surprised more at is the fact that they fired three shots and only 2 hit. I see that as very justified, and I applaud the officers for doing a great job. It does take some actual self awareness to actually point a weapon at a kid with the possibility of killing him. Again great job by the police.

Police will always be labeled the bad guy in these cases. "Why was so much excess force used on a minor?" he asked. "Three shots. Why not one that would bring him down?"
His wife, who demanded that the officers be punished, added: "What happened was an injustice." <-- Ignorance.
I remember having to do those school shooter drills, it was very annoying.

Heh. Glad to hear you are not a HuffPo fan. I didn't take you for one. I can relate, though. For the longest time I was just too lazy to change my Internet Explorer homepage from the default. That meant that my homepage news feed was MSNBC, Needless to say the...err... "slant" of the writing and mind numbing cluelessness in the comments section drove me to distraction. Eh. In real world defence/police shootings, that miss/hit ratio is actually above average. Many people's accury goes completely to hell when the adreneline is pumping for real. Recall the accidental shooting of Diallo in New York back in the later '90s. In that case the police fired 41 shots and only hit their target 19 times. (of course in that case the shooting occured in a low light enviorment and the shooting was very sudden in response to sudden presenting of an object the police thought was a gun, so that certainly was a factor) TR

At the risk of turning this into a political discussion, a large part of it is press bias. A large portion of the US media is left-leaning and has a resentment toward law enforcement and thus will attempt to treat them in an unfavorable light when they can. Sadly, a certain percentage of the population shares this view and will automaticly jump to the conclusion that the police did something wrong. For example a couple of years ago here in Austin the cops shot a young criminal (and he had a a lenghty arrest record so certainly deserves that title) who was sleeping off a drug binge in a parked car. The police aproached, the guy woke up and produced a real gun from his waist band, and he of course got shot by the police. Amazingly alot of the locals, as well as some of the usual anti-LEO types, were up in arms calling the shooting (which was in reality very justified) excessive and unjustified and were calling for firings, prosecutions, etc. Stuff like that makes the sensible person shake their head. The other thing to keep in mind is the quote above is from the kid's dad (If I recall right..). You would be amazed how some parents will support and stand up for their kids even when they are clearly in the wrong. Some parents are just absolutely blind to the facts and will deny that their "little angel" is ever in the wrong. As a 20+ year criminal justice professional, I've seen that ALOT. I would hope that if I ever did something that caused me to die from an over-dose of stupidity that my mom would not be making excuses for me. And yeah, that whole "three shots fired against a suspect with a firearm is somehow excessive force" thing is nuts and shows a profound igorance of real world shootings. Other crazy things I had seen posted in relation to this case are the ever popular "why didn't the police just shoot him in the arm/leg" drivel or (and I kid you not here) "The police were wearing bullet proof vests, why were they afraid? They should have just tackled the kid!" Amazing stuff. Ok, ok, I'm on my soap box again! Back to the original subject of the thread: don't be stupid and wave a replica firearm around in public, let alone point it at the cops! TR
