Does anyone know of a reliable source for custom flag patches (preferably the velcro backed kind)? I need to have something not normally available made. I've seen a couple of online retailers who claim to do custom work, but wanted to see if anyone else had anyone they could recomend before I started contacting people.

The most reliable ones will run you $100 upwards, mainly because they req. min. orders of 40 sets or more.
If you're willing to drop that much to stockpile for a team, go for it.

I found a place online that has no minimum order. They quoted me $20 a pop for small amounts of velcro backed flag patches. That's within acceptable range. Now I just need to do a little research before I place the order to make sure they are legit.
Truth be told I found a couple of places that do custom work with no minimum, but one of them declined the project due to the complex design of the seal in the middle of the flag on such a small (3.5x2.25) patch.

Ok, I just took the plunge and placed the order for a sample patch. They quote a turn around time of two weeks, so hopefully I'll have it on my kit at the OP on the 21st. If the project works out, I'll post details of the retailer for you all in case someone else needs custom work done.

Several people asked me yesterday about the follow up to this thread regarding custom patches. This is the company I used: www.qualityembroideredpatches.com/I'm pretty happy with the patch they made me. It was rather expensive at 25$, but I understand that "one offs" cost more and that the price per unit drops quite a bit when the number ordered is higher. Likewise, they were quick to fill the order and it shipped less than two weeks after I sent payment. I'd be glad to do business with them again. On a related note, I had more than one person ask me what that flag I was wearing was. Kids these days simply don't know there history, do they? Ah well, understandable, I suppose as the country ceased to exist when I was ten years old, and most of those who asked were not even born then. It's the flag of the Republic of Rhodesia, which existed 1965-80. Some people call it "Zimbabwe" now...not not me. I refuse to use the "Z-word". I've written two books that covered the war in Rhodesia ("Man Among men: The Rhodesian Bush War, 1964-79" and "Bush Wars: Africa 1965-2000" which will be published by Osprey Publishing in May) so I feel an affinity for the Rhodesians and their ultimately unsuccessful war on terrorism, marxism, and barbarism. They fought like cornered wolverines, but wound up losing in the end. TR
