I was tryin to figure out of it was used for teammate recognition but couldn't figure out how you wouldn't get spotted by the opposition

They are required for the dark buildings...Walking around with a dead rag in very low-light conditions (or complete darkness) does no-one any good. This is why a glowstick is used. This signifies that you have been KIA and hopefully wont be shot to hell by OPFOR..or even your own forces when traversing dark buildings.
